Important Defroster Installation Notes:  

• Most of the following information pertains only to 1990-97 Miatas.  1999 and later Miatas are almost always factory equipped with a defroster glass window soft top, and wiring a Duetto defroster window top usually only requires splicing the defroster window wires to the original defroster circuit leads.
  
• Our glass window defroster tops are supplied with two short wires that must be extended and attached to the defroster circuit in the car. The defroster windows do not come with a defroster dash switch, timed relay, or a plug that mates with the Miata defroster circuit plug on 1990-97 Miatas.  (You can easily splice the defroster lead extensions to the wires on the back of the plug.) 
  
• We highly recommend professional installation of the entire defroster circuit. 
  Our top installation instructions do not include instructions for defroster wiring.
  
• Not all Miatas come properly prewired for a defroster.   Some Miatas have a plug behind the driver's seat that was used to power the defroster for cars equipped with hardtops.  If the car was not purchased with a hardtop, Mazda often did not supply the necessary timed relay.  Without the timed relay (usually located in the trunk, forward of the battery), no power will get to the plug.  If you want to use this circuit to power the defroster, you'll need to purchase a timed relay from Mazda. 
  
• On most Miatas, the defroster circuit was designed to be activated when the heater fan switch is turned on.  This system was intended to be used with a  hardtop, not with a convertible top that will often be folded down.  For a convertible top, defroster activation using the fan switch is not necessarily a good idea because even with a timed relay, there's a risk of short circuits or even fire if the heated defroster window is sitting on the carpeted back panel.  When driving top down and heater fan on, you don't want the defroster circuit to be activated. 
  
• We think the best solution is to professionally install a separate circuit with its own switch and timed relay that will operate the defroster independently of the heater fan switch.
